From 5 to 11 May 2014, joint police operation Aerodromos took place to combat illegal migration through international airports in the European Union.

In the framework of operation Aerodromos, initiated and coordinated by the Greek authorities, over 130 migrants were intercepted. The majority of those migrants stopped were travelling on forged or counterfeit identity documents. Genuine identity documents, belonging to other people, were also discovered.

In addition to the migrants, a number of people smugglers were also arrested, as irregular migrants of various nationalities tried to reach their final destination in the EU via different airports.

In the context of this operation a transnational criminal organisation was dismantled in Greece, resulting in the arrest of six individuals in Greece for the smuggling of Albanian nationals.

In total 18 EU Member States took part in the action. Europol provided support during the operation through the analysis of criminal intelligence generated by the joint operation.
