Europol provided analytical and technical support to a French judge (Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction of Nancy), the French Gendarmerie (OCLDI and SR Nancy) and the Lithuanian Police during a 4-day operation against the mobile (itinerant) organised crime groups involved in cross-border vehicle thefts.

Several investigative actions took place in Lithuania in January 2012, following the arrest of four Lithuanian members of an organised crime group in France which had committed series of vehicle thefts in the Nancy region. The four suspects are still in pre-trial custody in France. One of them was originally detained under a false identity. Information exchange between the police services allowed the investigators to find out that he was also wanted in Lithuania under his real identity.

The established level of cooperation between the involved parties, provides solid perspectives for future operational cooperation between French Gendarmerie and Lithuanian Criminal Police. The assistance offered by Europol for this operation is ongoing and the results of the interviews, seizures and house searches will be processed to generate further intelligence and investigative leads.

This cross border investigation falls under the EU policy cycle priorities 2011-2013 i.e. to reduce the capacities of mobile (itinerant) organised crime groups.
